Sargent Steam Cleaner – Cost Comparison
By Julie In BlogHow Much Is A Couple Of Dollars A Day … Really?
I hear it all the time. “I’d really like a steamer but they’re too expensive, I can’t afford one!” I thought the same thing when I first heard about steam cleaners. Until I penciled it out and discovered how shockingly expensive it is NOT to own a steam cleaner.
There is one cost if you buy a Sargent Steamer and another cost if you don’t. To determine the true cost let’s analyze what you’re currently spending. If you added up the cost of every cleaning supply you buy, would it come somewhere close to this, give or take?
You could continue to spend your money like this. You could keep doing what you’ve always done, cleaning with chemicals and spending just a few dollars a month replacing them.
It seems like they cost hardly anything until you factor in the harsh reality that you’ll be replacing them over and over again, every week, for the rest of your life. And the more you clean, the more you will spend.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the average family spends $50.92 every month on cleaning supplies. That’s about $611.00 every year. If you look at the graph above, I guess I was a little conservative.
Maybe that doesn’t sound like a lot but think about this. If you clean with those chemicals, buying them over and over again at the average rate for, let’s say, 60 years of your adult life, you will have spent $36,660.00 before you hang up your last mop.
A Sargent Steam cleaner costs about $1,600.00 and lasts about 15-20 years. If you eliminate the chemicals you would have been using over that same 60 years of your adult life and buy 4 steamers (replacing it every 15 years), you’ll have spent only $6,400.00 plus some electricity costs.
For those who are mathematically challenged, the difference between $36,660.00 and $6,400.00 is $30,260.00. You could buy yourself a nice car with the money you’ll save.
I guess it would be the same logic around a refrigerator. You could keep your milk and eggs cold with an ice chest. You’d only have to spend a couple of dollars a day buying fresh ice.
Over 60 years that new $1.69 block of ice every day will have cost you $37,011.00. Or you could have spent about $1,000.00 on a very nice refrigerator. In that same 60 years of your adult life you’ll replace your refrigerator with a new one 4 times (every 15-20 years) and spend about $4,000.00 plus some electricity costs.
The difference between $37,011.00 and $4,000.00 is $33,011.00. Another nice car or the down payment on a house.
How about a washer and dryer. You could do your laundry at a laundromat. It only costs a couple of dollars to wash and a few more to dry per load. If you do 6 loads per week you’ll spend $23,500.00 over 15 years, $93,600 over that 60 year period of your adult life.
But who’s counting? It’s only a few dollars per week. Or you could spend $800.00 or even $2,000.00 on a really nice front load washer and dryer and use it for 15-20 years plus some electricity costs.
Now what do you believe about being able to afford (or not being able to afford) a Sargent Steamer? Is it really true that a steam cleaner, a refrigerator and a washer/dryer are too expensive or is it actually true that you can’t afford not to own them?
Don’t wait. The longer you put it off, the more money you’ll waste. It’s like renting versus buying a home. Do you really want to have nothing to show for your cleaning dollars a year from now, 10 years from now, 60 years (and $31,000) from now?
Buying a Sargent Steamer today means you start saving, not spending, every time you use it. Since you’re already spending around $50 per month, doesn’t it make better dollars and sense to reposition that money into the wise investment of a Sargent Steamer?
I know spreading it out “over time” feels like it’s easier to do. I realize the big investment today is maybe not as easy as the $50.00 per month that just comes out of your grocery budget.
But even financing the $50.00 per month still pencils out to huge savings over time. The payments end, the consumable disposable spin never does. Besides, actually being able to eat what you buy at the grocery store is a ton more fun.
